Climb Every Mountain

Up: A Mother and Daughter’s Peakbagging Adventure
Patricia Ellis Herr
Memoir

I liked this book. It’s a short read, but very interesting, especially if you’re into nature, the outdoors, and/or hiking.

Up is the story of Ms. Ellis Herr, who starts taking her five year-old daughter, Alex, on all sorts of hikes. Hikes that most children never even go on until they’re much older (or at all if they hate exercise and being outside). Ms. Ellis Herr describes their most harrowing and rewarding adventures, along with the lessons she and Alex both learn.

My only complaint about this book would be the parts where Ms. Ellis Herr talks about why she’s home-schooling her daughters. Eye-roll inducing and self-righteous are the best words to sum her up. But I shouldn’t judge another person for how they choose to raise their kids, so I quickly skimmed through those bits with gritted teeth and all was right with the world.

I would recommend Up to anyone who loves to hike or who wants to instill a love of nature in their children.
