The Innocents
Francesca Segal
Fiction
I love the cover of this book. It doesn’t really have anything to do with the plot, but what the hell. A lot of covers don’t.
The Innocents is about Adam, a devout Jewish man living in London. He’s engaged to his high school sweetheart, Rachel, and they’re slowly planning a wedding for next year. Then Rachel’s wild-child cousin, Ellie, comes home. She’s so different from Rachel and in spite of himself, Adam finds himself drawn to Ellie. He quickly realizes he’s in love with her and they try to be together, but their timing is never right. In the end, he realizes he must make sacrifices and grow up.
The book sounds good from the description, right? Well, it’s not. I didn’t particularly like any of the characters. Adam was okay, so was Rachel, but I wasn’t a big fan of Ellie. And by the time Adam realized he was “in love” with Ellie, I was kind of ticked off because it came out of nowhere. I didn’t like the ending, either. It was too predictable and everyone in the story just came across as pathetic.
Ms. Segal is a good writer (a bit too expository at times, but good) and if you’re really into the Jewish religion and history you’ll probably like this book. Otherwise, skip it or wait for her next one.
